Q: If I have gonorrhea will the Amoxicillin I got for strep cure it? I had sex (a one time kinda accident thing :/) and he texted me yesterday and told me he had gonorrhea. I went to the doctor today and I have strep so they gave me Amoxicillin and I heard that will work for gonorrhea. Will it cure both or not? The reason I didn’t ask the doctor is because my parent took me. Also how likely is it I actually got it? I don’t notice any symptoms. I’m a girl by the way.

A: Amoxicillin is not one of the recommended treatments for gonorrhea according to CDC guidelines. The preferred treatment for gonorrhea depends on where you live, as different strains of gonorrhea that are resistant to different antibiotics are more or less common in different areas. Often treatment for chlamydia is given at the same time because these infections frequently occur together.

It is extremely common for females to show no symptoms of gonorrhea, and occasionally for males as well. Gonorrhea can cause serious complications when untreated or only partially treated, so we recommend you see a medical provider to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Here is some more information at Planned Parenthood.

Q: I get Urinary Tract Infections after having sex with strap on dildos. How do I prevent this from happening? I don’t use condoms just normal KY lube.

A: We don’t recommend KY lube. Try a glycerin-free lube, there are many made specifically for sex toys. Additionally, you might want to try using a condom when having strap-on sex. Please keep in mind that washing the dildo before and after each use will help to rid it of bacteria that may be causing your UTIs. If, during sex the dildo is used on a partner or partners other than you, cleaning it between sessions, or using a condom for one of you and then removing it before penetrating the next partner will help limit the spread of bacteria, On a similar note, you can use this same trick to avoid cross-contamination when going from vaginal intercourse to anal, or vice versa.

Another thing to keep in mind is that toys do have a limited life span. If your dildo is getting old it might be time to replace it. This is also true if you notice any cuts, gashes, nicks, etc. These can harbor bacteria, which could be contributing to your UTIs.

Please keep in mind that your UTIs might not be related to your strap-on sex at all. If you continue to have them we recommend you visit your doctor.

Q: My boyfriend and I just recently tried anal sex. He got partially in, and then I called it quits. He then just reinserted his penis in to my vagina with out washing it. We don’t use condoms because we are monogamous. Now, my vagina itches and has a lot of white/yellowish discharge. This started two days after the sex. Is it possible that the anal sex and him not washing had something to do with this?

A: Yes, going from anal penetration to vaginal penetration without washing in between can cause problems. What you describe is most probably a bacterial infection and easily taken care of with antibiotics. Just go to your doctor or any health clinic and let them know what happened. What happened is quite normal (plenty of folks make this mistake sometime) and not serious unless left untreated.

You can move from the vagina to the anus without problem, but the other way has the potential to cause problems. We all have certain bacteria in our rectum that live just fine in that environment, but when introduced in the vagina they get out of control and cause an infection.

In terms of anal sex, there are a number of things you can do to successfully have painless, erotic, fulfilling and great anal sex. If you would like to know more about that, please feel free to email us back and we can give you some advice and even other resources (books, web sites, etc).
